The
Glass Garden began, literally, with one bucket of plate glass. Landscape
designer Andy Cao, wanted to evoke some of his childhood memories from
Vietnam; the rice terraces, banana groves, and particularly the surrealistic
salt fields.
Crushed plate glass proved
to be the best material to replicate the salt. Andy, and his business
partner Stephen Jerrom, began the slow crude process of cleaning and sifting
many tons of recycled plate glass to make their vision a reality.
As the garden took form and
co-operation with a large recycling company grew, more sophisticated machinery
took the place of hands-on labor. It took two years of trial and error,
but on February 22nd, 1998, the Glass Garden debuted in the Sunday Los
Angeles Times, and to the surprise and delight of its creators, a new
company was born.
